After coming up with some ideas as to what to write I thought there’s no better place to start than the greatest city in the world: DETROIT.
Admittedly, I’ve never gone to Detroit, BUT something about that city and the culture just gets me man. I want to say it started as a kid in the fourth or fifth grade listening to Big Sean. Since he repped Detroit heavy and he was my favorite artist at the time I rocked with it.
Fast forward like 10 years and I started doing my own research on the city and mainly on the Pistons. The Pistons always intrigued me because I feel like they always had at least one badass player on their roster when I was growing up: Rip Hamilton, Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince and Ben Wallace — basically that whole 04 championship team was badass.
Then you go through the years and they acquire players like Rodney Stuckey (huge lore), Ben Gordon (Chicacho legend), KCP (under-appreciated) and the list goes on. I would be remiss if I didn’t add the GOAT BOBAN Marjanovic.
Also, so Jem (Jack) won’t get mad at me or think I’m stupid you gotta add the bad boy Pistons. Those dudes were a PROBLEM. That bad boy culture is what I think drew me closer to that team and it all started with those guys.
I know the Malice at the Palace was a fucked up situation but being like 9 years old with my dad as he’s showing me the video, all I was thinking was how literally nobody on either the Pistons or Pacers (mainly Artest) gave a single fuck. Even the fans were always on go no matter what and that’s what I love about the team.
Now, times are a bit different. I think they’re shifting to a different era with this new roster but I still love it. With guys like Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, hell, I’ll throw in James Wiseman, I like what he can offer Detroit I won’t lie. Plus, they’ve got Marvin Bagley and Isaiah Stewart, the only man to put fear into the eyes of LeKing Daddy James.
It’s nice to see Detroit still has some of that bad boy energy in them, but like I said, with this new squad and Monty Williams now in charge, I think they can actually develop into a solid team and move away from that bad boy shit. With the draft coming up too, they can add some great talent to their roster. They got hoe’d out of a top three pick, in my opinion, this lottery but I really like this year’s prospects. Both the Thompson twins, I feel, have great upside, it seems Detroit fans are excited about the potential of drafting Cam Whitmore, Jarace Walker would fit but I think there’s too many big men (that’s just me) and if Wemby falls to five no chance the Pistons pass him up.
I will admit I didn’t catch many Pistons games last season as I’m from Illinois and Adam Silver won’t let me watch unless I pay him, but the 2023-24 season will be different. I’m all in on the Pistons. DETROIT VS. EVERYBODY.
